DR. JEAN DODDS VACCINATION PROTOCOL

How to prevent health problems in your puppy

In an effort to prevent over vaccination, my 14 year old miniature poodle was vaccinated following the Dr. Jean Dodds protocol when he was a puppy.

Most vets will follow your wishes and are familiar with Dr. Jean Dodds, who was Canadian and now lives in United States.

Puppies are not given multiple vaccinations on the same visit.  I have not been charged for multiple office visits so far, I have just had to return to have a vet tech administer a single vaccine at a time.

I also only give mercury free rabies vaccination.

Once my miniature poodle had completed the Jean Dodds protocol I had him titre tested  every 3 years to see if he still had antibodies that protected him from canine diseases.                                                              Because rabies vaccination is required by law and because the rabies titre test is not readily recognized I did go ahead and revaccinate every 3 years with a mercury free Rabies vaccination.

My standard poodles have also been raised with the Dr. Jean Dodds vaccination protocol.

What is a titre test?

A titer test is a simple blood test that measures an animal’s antibodies to viruses or other infectious agents.

Dr. Jean Dodds Vaccination Protocol

The following vaccine protocol is offered for those companion dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or desirable. The schedule is one I recommend and should not be interpreted to mean that other protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It’s a matter of professional judgment and choice.

9 – 10 weeks of age
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV
e.g. Merck Nobivac (Intervet Progard) Puppy DPV

14 – 15 weeks of age
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV

18 weeks of age
Parvovirus only, MLV
Note: Research states that last puppy parvovirus vaccine should be at 18 weeks old.

20 weeks or older, if allowable by law
Rabies – give 3-4 weeks apart from other vaccines
Mercury-free (thimerosol-free, TF)

1 year old
Distemper + Parvovirus, MLV
This is an optional booster or titer. If the client intends not to booster after this optional booster or intends to retest titers in another three years, this optional booster at puberty is wise.

1 year old
Rabies – give 3-4 weeks apart from other vaccines
3-year product if allowable by law; mercury-free (TF)

Perform vaccine antibody titers for distemper and parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired.

Vaccinate for rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a rabies antibody titer can also be performed to accompany the waiver request. A titer alone is not justification to waive the required rabies vaccination boosters. A titer simply indicates that an animal has mounted an immune response to vaccination and has the specified level of protection to the rabies virus. In other words, titer is simply an assurance to the medical exemption grantors that a dog has the specified protection against the virus.
